| Business Spotlight - Osawatomie Journal | | |
Jeff Gulley and the Osawatomie Journal hosted the monthly coffee on October 20th, at the Chamber Office, due to the chilly weather. Sixteen people attended.
Jeff explained that the decision to move the office to a converted space in his garage just made sense. He hadn't been utilizing the expansive space available at the prior location so it made more sense to use some available space at his house, and save the extra money.
The move has been a good one. There is plenty of room for the staff to work and being home allows him to help out more with the kids.
He credits his staff, Tom and Peggy Boren, Jim Hornbeck, Kevin Gray, Katie McDougal, his brother Jeremy, his mother Linda, and late father Les, for helping with the success of this paper the past two years.
The Journal offers special advertising rates for Not for Profits, Churches, Etc. If you have advertising needs, give him a call and they would be happy to help you out.
The Journals new office is located at 608 12th Street. Their phone issues have been resolved and they can be reached at 755-2536.
This month's coffee will be Tuesday, November 8th at 10:00am. Main Body Works will be hosting. Their address is 564 Main Street. Hope to see you there. |
| Welcome New Board Members! | | |
An election for new Board Members was held at the Annual Dinner. Grady Atwater, Susan Barrett, and Tammy Daulton all had terms expiring this October. We appreciate all their hard work and dedication to our organization over the past three years.
We had five individuals interested in the three open seats. The ballots were cast on the 20th and we're happy to announce Teri Auten, Kim Bolen, and Joyce Schrader as our three new members. We look forward to working with them, beginning this month.
Thank you to everyone that expressed interest in serving. A few terms expire every October, so feel welcome to volunteer in the future. |

| Prizes Sought for Christmas Festival | | |
We've decided to change things up a bit with the prize drawings this year. The Chamber will be donating the Grand Prize of an Apple Ipad and we're asking businesses if they would like to participate as well.
Gift baskets and Gift Certificates are appreciated, or you have the option of sponsoring a turkey or ham this year. Sponsorships for those are $12, and we will take care of purchasing the items from Moon's and getting the gift certificates, complete with the Sponsor's name, to the Auditorium that day.
Residents and Visitors will have all day to sign up in participating businesses, for free. The bags will be collected and all the names will be put into a hopper at the City Auditorium around 4:00pm.
Drawings for Prizes will begin immediately following the taste testing and judging of the Mayor's Chocolate Cake Contest and other Baking Contest awards.
You must be present to win! Your business (or name) will be announced, along with your donation. We will encourage the crowd to show their appreciation for these prizes by supporting their local businesses (You), by thinking and shopping local!
Please call the Chamber if you would like to donate something. We'd like to have our prize list complete by November 10th.

| Annual Dinner Recap | | |
The Chamber's Annual Dinner was held on Thursday, October 20th, in the Osawatomie High School Cafeteria. Ninety five people attended and had the pleasure of hearing Lynn Dickey speak about his Football days.
The Trivia game was well received. Thank you to all that submitted questions. Tables became teams as they collaborated and discussed answers. The winning team of Grady and Cinda Atwater, DJ and Lori Needham, and Barbara Zuel all recieved $10 in Chamber Bucks. They beat out their competition by answering 39 of the 67 questions, correctly. It was fun, and hopefully everyone learned something about our community that they had not known before.
Moon's catered the delicious meal and the Sub Debs helped with the serving. The election was held and the Citizen of the Year Award was presented.
We'd like to thank all that attended, along with everyone that had a part in the evening's success. Mark Govea, Lynn Dickey, First Option Bank, Great Southern Bank, USD #367, Life Care Center of Osawatomie, Hanes Florist, Moon's Hometown Market, the Sub Debs, the UPS Store, and Johnson's Creative Concepts.

| Citizen of the Year Named | | |
Each year, the Chamber accepts nominees and selects an individual to award the honor of Citizen of the Year. This year's award winner is Wayne Harclerode.
Wayne has spent his life loving music. What began as playing the steel guitar with his family's band grew into a lifelong hobby. He plays regularly for the Senior Center and nursing homes. You will have the chance to hear him play at the Christmas Festival as well. He and his band will take the stage from 11:00am - 12:30pm on November 19th.
This lifelong Miami County resident is also an avid pilot. He does flyovers for memorials and funerals, and has lead Memorial Day Flyovers in our area, along with other events, when his schedule allows.
He is a member of the United Methodist Church, the Elks, MCAA, EAA and International Commanche Society, is the Airport Mannager and Miami County Airport Association Treasurer.
Wayne is a Navy Veteran, serving from 1957-1960 on the USS Ashtabula. He is the current treasurer of the USS Ashtubula and will host their reunion in 2012.
As this year's recipient, he received a framed certificate, one year Free membership to the Chamber, and his name has been engraved on the Volunteer Plaque that hangs in Memorial Hall.
We are proud to have named him Citizen of the Year. |

| Spook Parade/Boo Bash Recap | | |
The Spook Parade and Boo Bash were held on Friday, October 28th. Once again, we collaborated with the YMCA on this event. Thanks to the generous donations of many businesses, we were able to give out 300 goodie bags to the kids this year.
Activities in the Auditorium began about 3:15pm and included games and contests. The OHS Dazzlers were a fantastic help with running the games. The costume contest had many participants and the four lucky winners all took home gift certificates for free pizza and cinnamon sticks, courtesy of our local Pizza Hut. The parade itself began at 4:00pm and was lead by a Fire Truck this year!
Once the parade reached 6th Street, the children were free to trick or treat the businesses and over 10 groups and organizations that took part in the trunk or treating this year.
Fortunately, the weather cooperated and we had a great turn out. Thanks to the volunteers, this event went smoothly and was a lot of fun. It could not happen without the cooperation of the City, the Police Department, and the Fire Department, so a special thanks to all of them.
We held a food drive in conjunction with this and collected a box of items to be donated to the local food pantry.
Thank you to the following Businesses and individuals that contributed to the success of this event:
Auten Pharmacy, Cags, Cub Scouts, Century Link, City of Osawatomie, First Option Bank, FCCLA, Hanes Florist, Kays, Life Care Center, Main Body Works, Main Street Businesses, Midwest Regional Credit Union, Moon's Hometown Market, OHS Dazzlers, Osawatomie Fire Department, Osawatomie Police Department, Osawatomie State Hospital, Partners in Education, Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home, Pizza Hut, Sub Debs, OHS Stuco, USD #367, and the YMCA.

| Marketing Meeting | | |
The City of Osawatomie, Osawatomie Rotary, Economic Development, and the Chamber collaborated to host a Market Osawatomie Meeting on October 3rd. Councilman Mark Govea asked Colleen Doctorian, from KCMO Water Services to join us in sharing information on social media.
Over 25 people attended to hear ideas on how Facebook, websites, and Twitter can be cost effective forms of communicating with customers. Osawatomie Rotary provided lunch, and we met in the basement of the Library. |
| Refrigerator Magnet | | |
The Boy Scouts will be holding their Fall Food Drive this week. If you live in town, a bag will be left at your door on Saturday. Check inside for your magnet, then fill the bag with non-perishable food items for our local food pantry, and leave it outside your door for pick up on November 12th.
If you don't live in town, there are extras available at the Chamber Office. |
| Advertising in the Chamber Office | | |
Remember that your business is welcome to advertise in the Chamber Office. If you have pamphlets, brochures, business cards, giveaway items, or anything else you'd like to have displayed, just drop it by. We supply the City with welcome bags for new residents, and would be happy to include your information. |
